Eating in the Era of Social Distancing

Our social fabric is woven of many cultural threads, not least of which is food. Across the ages, we have transmitted our family histories through dishes and techniques, marked momentous occasions with feasts, and crafted our identities in lockstep with our cuisines.

Today, a global pandemic is forcing us to change our way of life — at least for the time being. Social-distancing is being employed to slow the spread of disease to allow our systems to deal with the surge in the sick. Of course, social distancing is not without great cost to our economies and to our psyche; but it appears to be our best course of action available to “flatten the curve”. Events of all kinds are being cancelled. Libraries and museums have been temporarily shuttered. France, of all places, has closed its restaurants.

In an effort to help our local economy, keep our staff working, and bring some joy to our clients in this difficult time; Devil’s Food Catering is rolling out HANDBASKET — a collaboration with Kachka, Daily Cafe, Freeland Spirits, Ironlight, Dream Cakes, CorksCru, Cow Bell Cheesemongers, Spella Caffè, and other top producers, purveyors, and farms — to provide handmade meals for high quality in-home dining experiences.

All meals will be prepared in our sanitary commercial kitchen, which is closed to the general public.  Starting this week, you can order here  for curbside pick-up at 3 locations in Portland and Lake Oswego.

Together we WILL get through this!
